Will the hardware utilized in Williams-Sonoma, Inc. furniture collections stand up to damp conditions by the ocean? We do not provide specific material data in regards to stain and paint; however, we can confirm that all Williams-Sonoma, Inc. furniture meets the standards set by the California Air Resource Board (CARB). See Responsible Practices for additional information. What type of Lacquer do we use? Our main system is a regular Nitrocellulous Lacquer system, typical of most residential furniture finishes of the last 50 years. Slow-drying solvent-based lacquers that contain nitrocellulose, a resin obtained from the nitration of cotton and other cellulosic materials, were developed in the early 1920s, and extensively used in the automobile industry for 30 years. These lacquers are also used on wooden products, furniture primarily, and on musical instruments and other objects. These lacquers were a huge improvement over earlier automobile and furniture finishes, both in ease of application and in color retention. The preferred method of applying quick-drying lacquers is by spraying (the development of nitrocellulose lacquers led to the first extensive use of spray guns). Nitrocellulose lacquers produce a hard yet flexible, durable finish that can be polished to a high sheen. We are attempting to move toward full blown water based product and away from plated finishes all together. Will marble finishes stain? Yes, all marbles will stain to a degree, it is a porous natural product.
