Natural Fibers Natural fibers generally feature flat weaves that are soft and tailor well for upholster furniture. However, natural products may fade in direct sunlight and be susceptible to pilling. Cotton Made from the cotton plant, this is soft, absorbent, and provides good resistance to wear, fading and pilling. Durability and use depend on the weave and finish. Linen Made from the flax plant, linens tend to have a lot of hard plant fibers and slubs. Linen typically resists pilling and fading. Soiled linen upholstery must be professionally cleaned to avoid shrinkage. Wool Made from animal hair, wool is warm, and offers good resistance to pilling, fading, wrinkling, and soil. Generally, wool is blended with a synthetic fiber to make it easier to clean and to reduce the possibility of felting the fibers (causing them to bond together until they resemble felt) Silk Made from the cocoons of silk worms, silk has strong fibers and a natural shine, but can be damaged by sunlight. Silk should be professionally cleaned if soiled.
